US Aims to Curb Cybercrime by Messing With Hackers’ Minds

Government-funded study seeking to develop tools to take advantage of hackers’ biases and vulnerabilities.

An arm of the US intelligence community is trying to figure out how hackers think in order to thwart their attacks. Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity, part of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and known as IARPA, selected five different research teams to conduct research and find ways to boost cybersecurity by better understanding what motivates hackers, and try to predict their behavior.

Ritu Chadha, senior director for research science at Peraton Labs, discussed the company’s support of the IARPA project. “A goal of the research is writing software that detects and triggers biases,” she said.
